Editor's Note: Those loud bangs first thing in the morning on both sides of the River often result in 911 calls. Gunshots, for sure. However, in the Thousand Islands as well as on hundreds of lakes, rivers, and ponds across both countries, the shots usually signify the start of the annual Duck Hunting Season.
In Ontario, the season opened on September 28th and closes on January 12th, 2025. In New York state North Country residents will hear the guns in the first week of October through to the first Sunday in January 2025.
This fall, I received these two pieces of art. Gretchen Huntley, the poet laureate of Gananoque, ON, sent her poetry, which was inspired by Sam Battams’ photograph. Both are beautiful and I am pleased to share their gift with our River communities.
Enjoy.
By Gretchen Huntley, Poet Laureate, Town of Gananoque
Gretchen Huntley was appointed Poet Laureate for the Town of Gananoque in March 2021. In October 2024, Gretchen wrote "Tributes by Gananoque's Poet Laureate" for TI Life, and we have reviewed two small books that Gretchen recently published: "Reality and Me" by editor, Susan Smith in November, 2020 and "Poetry Through a Lens" by John Swift in June 2021. Both books featured photography by Sam Battams. I hope you will join me in thanking this poet for her inspirational works.
