24th Annual Paddle for Betterment
Adventure awaits this summer in the scenic 1000 Islands at the 24th Annual Paddle for Betterment Poker Run!
Join paddlers of all ages and skill levels on Saturday, July 12th for a quick morning of outdoor excitement and community spirit along the St. Lawrence River.
Hosted by The Foundation for Community Betterment, this event promises a blend of natural beauty and charitable giving. Every paddle stroke helps support local causes—fueling support for community projects, organizations, and individuals who need it most. This year alone the organization supported over 14 recipients, meeting over $29,000 of immediate needs in Alexandria Bay (and counting!).
The adventure begins at 9 a.m. sharp at Alexandria Bay's Village Beach, rain or shine. Participants will embark on a 3.5-mile journey through the picturesque riverside course known affectionately as "paddlers' paradise." Kayaks, canoes, skiffs, and stand-up paddleboards will dot the shoreline as paddlers collect cards to build their poker hands.
NEW this year is an elective “Short Route” option, designed for participants seeking a less demanding course while still enjoying all the fun. The option allows paddlers to skip the furthest stop on the course—typically considered the most challenging leg, bringing paddlers into the main shipping channel—while still receiving a full poker hand. Paddlers choosing this route will simply pick up their poker card at check-in on event day.
“This shortened route is perfect for families, first-timers, and anyone who wants all the fun without going the full distance,” said Erica Garlock, event spokesperson. “You’ll still get the thrill, the amazing views, and the chance at a winning hand—just with fewer strokes and more smiles. It truly makes the event a paddle for everyone!”
Paddlers can look forward to competing for exciting prizes, including GRAND PRIZES for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in both adult and youth divisions. A $2,500 gift certificate to Sundance Leisure Pool & Spa is available for the lucky individual who pulls off a Royal Flush! A fun “Joker Card Draw” and “Last Paddler Back to the Beach” add an extra dash of excitement to the competition. All paddlers have the chance to win fantastic door prizes.
Following the paddle, an awards and recipient ceremony at Scenic View Park Pavilion will honor participants and beneficiaries, as well as provide breakfast and raffles for all paddlers. An amazing Crystal-Clear Bottom Kayak will be raffled off!
PADDLE FOR BETTERMENT isn't just about the prizes; it's about coming together as a community to paddle for a purpose and make a real difference in the community. Whether you're an experienced paddler or a first timer, this is an event everyone can love and enjoy, at any age.
“There’s something truly special about being on the water—surrounded by incredible people, all paddling together with purpose,” said Trevor Garlock, a member of the organizing team. “It’s peaceful, it’s powerful, and it perfectly captures the spirit of Betterment. Our community is proud to host such an amazing event that not only showcases the beauty of the 1000 Islands, but also creates real, lasting impact for those who need it most.”
Early pre-registration is encouraged, offering a $5 discount off registration with code PADDLEPROMO online. On-site registration is available on event-day for $50 (Adults; 18+) and $25 (Youth). All paddlers receive: Entry to Welcome Party (Friday Evening), FREE Breakfast, Door Prize Entry, Chance to win valuable GRAND PRIZES, Water and Snack Bar and special signature gift! Bring your own kayak/vessel and life jacket. Single and double seated kayak rentals are available locally through suggested locations listed online.
