News in October, TI Life

Thanksgiving in Canada was different this year. Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada's Chief Public Health Officer, said indoor holiday gatherings of family or friends should be kept small, especially in provinces such as Quebec and Ontario where infection rates are the highest. So we had Thanksgiving by ourselves.  We certainly miss our US and Canadian friends and neighbours, but we wish everyone well.

There is news about the border. Canada will not be open for tourism, recreational or leisure travel, but as of October 8 there are a number of new exceptions. These allow for the entry of certain extended family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents, including couples who have been dating for at least a year and their children, as well as grandchildren, siblings and grandparents. Check the Canadian Border Services website often for updates. [https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/2019-novel-coronavirus-infection/latest-travel-health-advice.html]

Clayton's Sunflower Contest

The 2020 winners of Clayton's Sunflower Contest were selected and certificates presented on Saturday, September 1st.  Winners also received donated gift certificates from the Clayton Popcorn Company.  First place winners were Sarai and Max Jarvis, for their 12’8” tall sunflower.  2nd place winners were Chase and Henry Rueckert, pictured with contest organizer Ken Brabant; their sunflower was 12’5” tall.  3rd place winners were BJ Pete and his son Joseph, who asked that their entry be listed in memory of BJ’s mother, Carol E. Pete, who died on August 24th of this year.

Kinney Drugs gets an honorable mention again this year, for the many cheerful sunflowers brightening the drive past their location on James St. in Clayton, NY.

Please Don't Forget

If you are on the River or the shoreline in October, please take photographs for TI Life. By now, your fish stories are well rehearsed, and what were your Social Distancing ideas to meet with family and friends?

James R. Miller posted this on 1000 Islands River Rats Now and Then Facebook page. "While looking out at this crazy day at the river, I was reminded of my good friend Will Salisbury with this special sculpture he did...hope his health improves soon!"
