Next up in the series:
Antonia Hylton – Madness
Tuesday, February 11 (no Saturday session)
1:00-2:00 pm
In Madness, Peabody and Emmy award-winning journalist Antonia Hylton chronicles the 93-year history of Crownsville Hospital in Maryland and the stories of Black families whose mental health suffered as they tried, and sometimes failed, to find safety and dignity.
Hylton traces the legacy of slavery to the treatment of Black people’s bodies and minds in our current mental healthcare system. She also grapples with her own family’s experiences with mental illness, and the secrecy and shame that it reproduced for generations. Madness is a captivating and heartbreaking meditation on how America decides who is sick or criminal, and who is worthy of our care or irredeemable.
Cat Bohannon – Eve
Tuesday, March 4 and Saturday, March 8
1:00-2:00 pm both days
A myth-busting, eye-opening landmark account of how humans evolved, offering a paradigm shift in our thinking about what the female body is, how it came to be, and how this evolution still shapes all our lives today.
Eve is a no-nonsense, hard-hitting, seriously researched (but readable) account of what it really means to biologically be a woman. With boundless curiosity and sharp wit, Cat Bohannon covers the past 200 million years to explain the specific science behind the development of the female sex.
The series will continue with these authors and books:
Percival Everett – James (March 25 & 29)
R.F. Kuang – Yellowface (April 29 & May 3)
Elizabeth Kolbert/Terry Tempest Williams – H Is For Hope (May 13 & 17)
